The Medical Director of Pain Management (MDPM) is a new position developed to establis! h and direct a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, coordinated Pain Management Program for the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview and the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital (the Medical Center). The two overarching goals are to: 1) leverage resources and integrate clinical, research, education and administrative efforts to better prevent and manage pain for the benefit of our patients and 2) transform the Medical Center to be a recognized national leader in pain management that is patient centered and driven by the best research, experience and technology.
The Program primarily encompasses pain services in the hospital setting for adults and children provided by interdisciplinary clinical teams with pain expertise in acute perioperative and non-operative pain, chronic pain and palliative pain. Various medical disciplines may be involved including anesthesiology, interventional radiology, internal medicine, neurosciences, physical medi! cine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, surgery and complementary! therapies. Close cooperation and collaboration with outpatient pain services will be required in order to provide high quality and seamless care for the patients.
The position of MDPM is supported by the Medical Center and the faculty practice plan (UMPhysicians) and includes both major institutional leadership (.5 FTE) and direct service roles (.5 FTE). Academic appointment (department, rank and track) in the Medical School for the MDPM will be consistent with the candidate's primary residency, academic record and prior appointments and experience. The Medical School and the head of the appropriate department will retain oversight for academic performance and promotion. The MDPM is encouraged to engage in productive pain related research.
Qualifications:
MD or DO certified, or eligible for certification, by the American Board of Pain Medicine or who has other evidence of equivalent pain management expertise;
Licensed, or eligible for,! a valid Minnesota medical license;
Board certification in primary residency (anesthesiology preferred but other residencies acceptable);
Demonstrated leadership, administrative and communication skills;
Demonstrated passion to develop and direct a comprehensive, patient-focused, multidisciplinary pain management program in an academic medical center;
Demonstrated experience and effectiveness as an educator of pain management techniques and services;
Excellence in patient care;
Background in translational, clinical and outcomes/process improvement research with associated publications preferred.
