The Surgery Specialty Care Service Line encompasses all inpatient and outpatient care and services delivered by the following 15 subspecialties: Anesthesia, Audiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Colo-Rectal Surgery, Dermatology, General Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics Otolaryngology, Podiatry, Radiation Oncology, Urology and Vascular Surgery. The service line includes the Operating Room, Outpatient Surgery, Post-anesthesia Care Unit, Surgical Intensive Care, a 40 bed surgery-telemetry inpatient unit, a 40 bed Observation/Short Stay unit and 14 outpatient clinics. The service line is made up of approximately 420 FTEE with four inpatient nurse managers, a Clinic Director, four outpatient managers, and a social worker supervisor. The Assistant C! hief Nurse (ACN) provides primary assistance to the Chief Nurse for the! Surgery and Specialty Care service line in guiding the overall management and daily operations of the service line. The scope of the ACN extends into all major practice areas, i.e., clinical, administrative, and education. The ACN is also a member of the Nursing management team and assists the Chief Nurse in ensuring the administration of safe, quality nursing care throughout the service line including inpatient surgery departments, outpatient surgery and specialty clinics, and the peri-operative departments. The ACN assists with organizing, directing, integrating and evaluating the clinical, administrative, evaluative and educative processes throughout service line. The ACN ensures the implementation of all patient care policies, procedures and directives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: management, coaching and supervision of nursing and supportive staff, program development, performance improvement leadership, and labor management activities. The ACN f! unctions in the absence of the Chief Nurse for Surgery and Specialty Care Services.
As part of the Specialty Care leadership team, the Assistant Chief Nurse works collaboratively with the Chief of Specialty Care and the Administrative Officer. The incumbent also works jointly with the Nurse Executive, Deputy Nurse Executive, Chief Nurses, and Nurse Managers in providing leadership throughout the facility. Responsibilities include: planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating programs and outcomes; daily attention to complex personnel management; participation in executive level decision making deliberations, performance in a full range of administrative duties, and other duties and/or special projects.
Educational Requirement: A minimum of BSN/BAN; Master's Degree in Nursing is preferred. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA ! Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nurs! ing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
