The Minneapolis VA Health Care System, a class 1A high complexity medical center within VISN 23, is seeking an enthusiastic physician leader to become the Director of its nationally and internationally renowned Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). The mission of the Minneapolis GRECC is to improve the care of the older Veteran with cognitive impairment through integrated research, education and the develo! pment of innovative clinical models. The GRECCÂ's current areas of research focus include animal models of AlzheimerÂ's and ParkinsonÂ's disease, brain imaging in dementia, clinical trials in AlzheimerÂ's disease, and new models of health care delivery in AlzheimerÂ's disease. Additional research programs include neuropeptide control of eating, driving and dementia, and health outcomes. An emerging focus area is the longitudinal cognitive assessment of Veterans with traumatic brain injuries. The GRECCÂ's Memory Loss Clinic is a model for the assessment and treatment of dementia and serves as a site for clinician trainees from the University of Minnesota, Hennepin County Medical Center, and other programs.

The GRECC Director will be responsible for the overall operations and management of all GRECC programs and the Memory Loss Clinic. The GRECC Director will provide strategic leadership to foster continued growth of the GRECCÂ's research and education programs, deve! lop strong working relationships with research and clinical Service Lin! e leaders, and foster and strengthen ties with the University of Minnesota. The successful candidate will ensure close alignment with the medical center operations and the Network. Further, the GRECC director will coordinate innovative educational endeavors whereby the research of the GRECC can be shared broadly and impact care delivery.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to hire two full-time researchers to expand the GRECC research program.

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience

The best qualified candidate will be an established and successful physician researcher who will qualify for an academic appointment at the University of Minnesota at the Associate or Full Professor Level. The ideal candidate will be a flexible Â"big pictureÂ" thinker who possesses excellent interpersonal skills and is able to lead and work with groups. In addition, the ideal candidate will have administrative and leadership experience and a track record of mentoring juni! or faculty. Physician candidates who are board certified/eligible in in! ternal medicine, geriatrics, psychiatry, neurology, or rehabilitation medicine are preferred.

Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians, inc! luding residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
