Diagnostic Radiologic Tech (Computed Tomography) position wit! h the Imaging Department. The Selectee appointed into this temporary detail may later become permanent or be returned to his/her prior bargaining unit covered position at any time.

Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (CT)'s principle responsibilities are to perform Computerized Transaxial scan procedures (CT or CAT scans) and general imaging exams for the patients of this medical center . These include examinations of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, head, extremities, neck, etc.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table

Prepare room, equipment and material needed for patient procedures

Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events

Processes films using CR/DR digital capture and can QC and transfer images successfully to PACS.

Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and profess! ional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology ! Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures.

Perform computer work and required forms associated with patient exams, credit of patient visits, complications and/or quality improvement activities of the Radiology Department.

Administer contrast material, under the direction of the radiologist, according to protocols.

Provide training to student radiographers and residents from affiliated programs and facilitates the attainment of established program objectives

Provide education to patients and their families on Imaging procedures

Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule: F ull time, Midnight Tour, T-F, every other weekend (approximately 3/4 holidays per year). QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology! (ARRT) (R). English Language Proficiency. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) Physical Requirements: For more information, refer to requirements section of this announcement.

Preferred Experience: ARRT (CT) certified applicants

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-5 - Experience or Education. None beyond the basic requirements.
GS-6 - Experience. At Least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and ! other characteristics needed to provide general radiologic technology s! ervices in a therapeutic setting. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Knowledge of basic technique standards for minimum radiographic exposure; 2. Knowledge of anatomy and positioning; 3. Knowledge of all patient safety procedures; 4. Knowledge of radiographic producing equipment; and 5. Ability to learn basic computer functions.
OR,
Education. The successful completion of a 4-year baccalaureate degree program in radiography or other directly related field to diagnostic radiology/imaging.
GS-7 - Experience. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics needed to provide general radiologic technology services in a therapeutic setting and/or in a specialized area. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Knowledge of the te! chnical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality in the digital system; 2. Knowledge of different contrast material required for the requested study; 3. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, appropriate beam limitation to anatomical area, and employing lead shielding when performing standard or fluoroscopic procedures; 4. Knowledge of the function of computed radiography, Phosphor cassettes and computed radiography (CR) readers; 5. Knowledge of PACS systems, CDROMS, and basic computer skills;
OR,
Education. The successful completion of 1 full academic year of graduate education leading to a degree program in radiography or other directly related field related to diagnostic radiology/imaging. Education may relate to the duties of a specific position or to the occupation, but must be appropriate for the position being filled.
Certification. Certification by ARRT in one of the ! specialized areas of radiologic technology is highly desirable, in addi! tion to certification by ARRT as a general radiologic technologist.
GS-8 - Experience. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristic needed to provide general radiologic technology services in a therapeutic setting and/or in a specialized area. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines; 2. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed; 3. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results; 4. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed; 5. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealing with customer based, patients, staff, family, vis! itors, and volunteers; and 6. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
Certification. Certification by ARRT in one of the specialized areas of radiologic technology is highly desirable, in addition to certification by ARRT as a general radiologic technologist.
