The role of the Surgery Specialty Care Surgery Coordinator is to provide excellent care across the continuum thr! oughout the perioperative period for surgical and specialty care patients. The surgery coordinatorÂ's main function is to coordinate services within the clinic and to ensure patients are prepared for surgery. Reviews all surgical cases and determines appropriate date and time to schedule. Reviews incoming consults to the service, prioritizing and facilitating access. Reviews/prioritizes cancelled/postponed cases and using the electronic wait list, fills openings to keep OR operating at full capacity and improve access. Works to maintain at least 85% OR utilization rate or better. Coordinates consults from referral case manager and referring providers, ensuring timely access to clinic. Triage phone calls from patients, primary care providers, and Emergency Department providers and facilitates the appropriate care in the appropriate time frame. Reacts appropriately to neurosurgery and other medical emergencies. Schedules surgery based on staff attending schedule, resident ope! rating room schedule and On-Call/clinic schedule. Ensures appr! opriate perioperative education for patients and family members. Develops and oversees pre-operative education and reinforces as needed. Ensures documentation of patient education and other patient encounters in appropriately titled CPRS notes. Provides patients with printed educational materials with detailed pre-op instructions. Coordinates care between services and sends appropriate consults as needed between primary care, pulmonary medicine, cardiology, PT, prosthetics, dietician, social work, and the anesthesia department. Acts as an internal and external expert/resource throughout the continuum. Assists OR nurses post-operatively with questions regarding post-operative plan of care. Communicates plan of care to other disciplines and across the continuum. Coordinates pre-operative work up and ensures all appropriate information has been obtained for surgery and preparation for surgery is complete. Acts as the resource/contact person for vascular patients from consult t! hrough rehabilitation.
