The Health Technician (Ophthalmology) position encompasses a variety of mult-step, complex technical duties and reports to the Eye Clinic ! Manager. Some travel between Ramsey, MN and Minneapolis, MN will be required for this position. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs A-scan measurements and uses the information to calculate intraocular lens implant powers
- Performs pachymetry and specular microscopy
- Takes fundus, external and slit lamp photos
- Intake clinic patients, including obtaining medical, surgical, family and social eye history, reviewing the current medication list, screening for patient allergies and documenting all of these things
- Measure and record visual acuities
- Neutralize and determine the power of glasses using an autolensometer
- Measures intraocular pressure with a pneumotonometer, Tono-Pen, or applanation tonometer tip
- Performs visual field testing using both the Humphrey Visual field machine and the Goldmann Visual Field machine
- Performs color vision testing, gl! are and brightness testing
- Obtains corneal measuremen! t using a keratometer and corneascope
- Performs basic ocular motility testing
- Performs refractions using an autorefractor and phoropters
- Assists in minor surgical and laser procedures
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to emergencies
- Provides patient education regarding their ophthalmic treatment plan and reinforces physician orders
- Assures all reusable medical equipment is cleaned and reprocessed per manufacturer's recommendations and clinic guidance
- Participates in continuous improvement activities

This is a full-time position is part of the Specialty Care Service Line, Ophthalmology department, and will be located at the Northwest Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Ramsey, Minnesota.

Time-in-grade: Applic! ants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements for positions above the GS-5 level; e.g. one year at the GS-06 level for GS-07.
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to meeting experience or education requirements, applicants who wish to qualify at the GS-07 grade level, must have demonstrated skill performing manifest refraction using manual phoropters.
Experience Requirement : Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled (Health Technician (Ophthalmology)).
For GS-06:
One year of specialized experience is required that is equivalent to the next lower level! , GS-05, in Federal service. Specialized experience may have been obtained in a medical/health environment where the employee typically performs nonprofessional supportive work for Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, or Surgical Coordinators. Examples of specialized experience would typically include: Performing A-scan measurements; taking fundus, external and slit lamp photos; measuring and recording visual acuities; using autolensometer to neutralize and determine the power of glasses, performing visual field testing; obtaining corneal measurement using a keratometer and corneascope; performing refractions; assisting with pre-operative work-up and pre-operative history and physical; preparing surgical charts, and similar.
For GS-07:
One year of specialized experience is required that is equivalent to the next lower level, GS-06, in Federal service. Specialized experience may have been obtained in a medical/health environment where the employee t! ypically performs nonprofessional supportive work for Ophthalmologists,! Optometrists, Opticians, or Surgical Coordinators. Examples of specialized experience would typically include: Performing A-scan measurements using the information to calculate intraocular lens implant powers; performing pachymetry and specular microscopy; taking fundus, external and slit lamp photos; measuring and recording visual acuities; using autolensometer to neutralize and determine the power of glasses; performing visual field testing; obtaining corneal measurement using a keratometer and corneascope; performing refractions using autorefractor and manual phoropters; scheduling complex ophthalmologic procedures.
NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-05 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-07. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the! school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
