The Nurse Series includes Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (i.e. Clinical Nurse specialists, Nurse anesthetists, Nurse-midwives and Nurse practitioners)

Provide care to patients in hospitals, clinics, occupational health units, homes, schools and communities.

Administer anesthetic agents and supportive treatments t! o patients undergoing surgery or other medical procedures.

Promote better health practices, teaching and performing research in one or more phases of the field of nursing.

Basic Requirements

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. (One year of nursing experience as a military corpsman that has been accepted by a State licensing body may be accepted in lieu of education at the GS-4! level.)

Registration:
Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-07

: One year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level

under the General Schedule, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems, which has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position

performing work in support of direct patient care as a Nurse.

GS-09

: One year of speciali! zed experience at the GS-07 level

under the General Schedule, ! or equivalent pay band in other pay systems, which has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position

performing work in support of direct patient care as a Nurse to obstetrical, fetal and neonatal patients to include ante/intra/postpartum and postoperative care in hospitals, clinics, outpatient clinics and emergency rooms.

GS-10

: One year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level

under the General Schedule, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems, which has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position

providing professional nursing care to obstetrical patients, including duties such as monitoring postpartum patients and collecting blood and urine specimens for lab analysis; performing procedures, treatments and medical administration for patients; serving as a nursing team leader, in! cluding scheduling and directing shift operations; and providing instructions to patients to communicate the plan of car.

GS-11

: One year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level

under the General Schedule, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems, which has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position

included performing work in support of direct patient care as a Nurse to obstetrical, fetal and neonatal patients to include ante/intra/postpartum and postoperative care in hospitals, clinics, outpatient clinics and emergency rooms

: One year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level

providing comprehensive profe! ssional nursing care to patients; providing extensive follow-up and pre! ventative health care, planning intervention and evaluation of patients care methods for issues and problems; examining diagnose and treating diseases; interpreting and examining findings and test results

EDUCATION:
GS-07:
Completion of a professional nursing program OR 1 full year of graduate education

or

bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement.

GS-09

:

Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree.

GS-10

:

Completion of 2 full years of progressively higher level post graduate education in a related field.

GS-11

:

Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in a related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

Knowledge of professional nursing care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate difficulty.

2.

Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use.

3.

Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient condition including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.

4.

Skill in setting up and operating specialized medical equipment such as resuscitators, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, and ventilators.

5.
Ability to assess patient care needs, develop nursing care plans, a! nd advise on changes in patient status.
