This position is located in the Specialty Care Service Line Operating Room at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, part of the Veteran! s Service Integrated Network, VISN 23, in Minneapolis, MN. Incumbent will work rotating day and evening shifts as well as rotating weekends and holidays.

Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
In this position, you will serve as a member of the nursing team in the peri-operative section, including operating rooms (OR), urology procedural rooms (GUOR), Outpatient Surgery (OPS) and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) while provide care to patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs skin preparation of operative sites for patients undergoing cardiothoracic procedures
  • Obtains needed supplies and equipment upon request during the course of a surgical procedure
  • Performs inventory and restocking duties
  • Assists with patient turnover including bagging out, disposal of hazardous wastes, sharps and bodily fluid!
  • Assists with OR/GUOR room set up including obtaining specialt! y equipment, positioning devices, video and power equipment, tourniquets and microscopes
  • Assists in perioperative communication pre and postoperatively in surgical waiting areas
  • Performs glucometry in OPS and PACU upon request
  • Identifies, verifies preoperative preparation including nothing by mouth (NPO) status and family member contact information
  • Assists with safe movement, transport and transfer of patients to and from the OR, PACU and OPS including escort to the front door upon patient discharge from OPS
  • Performs vital sign monitoring and accurately reports and documents intra-operatively and in recovery room
  • Observes for any untoward responses to anticipated surgical procedure or anesthetics including shock, hemorrhage, circulatory and/or respiratory disturbance during transport, responds to emergencies, and communicates to accountable RN.
  • Delivers specimens to various laboratories, obtains blood products f! rom the blood bank as needed, frozen bone from the freezer upon request and delivers pathology specimens to the pathology lab.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday with rotating variable 8 hour shifts from 6:00am to 10:00pm (no weekends or holidays)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by Friday, March 29, 2013.

Experience Requirements :
For GS-5: 1 year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide. Specialized experience is defined in the OPM qualification standard as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAÂ's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Sup! port duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for physically/mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.

Educational Substitution for Experience :
4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) Training: Completion of appropriate training such as inservice training programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and government-sponsored developmental training programs will be allowed credit on a month-for-month basis, generally through the GS-5 level.

Combination of Experience and Education

Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience require! ments. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond t! he second year is equivalent to one year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Depending on the essential duties of a specific position, usable vision, color vision, hearing, or speech may be required. However, in most cases, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant for appointment.
