You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:
This
position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below
represent the full performance level of GS-7. At the GS-6 grade level, you
will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence.
Y! ou will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full
performance level of GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor
and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level
work, and availability of funds.
This position will serve as a Surgical Technician (ST) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Minneapolis, MN and is a member of the surgical team. You will provide assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. You will participate with the surgical team members in implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Your duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during minor and complex surgical procedures such as; open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, endoscopy, c! omplex spine, and total joint replacement surgery.
- Sets up ste! rile fields with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment.
- Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assuring that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure; prepares, organizes, and maintains complex sterile surgical setups.
- Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipating the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.
- Utilizes universal precautions and following all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment.
- Assists the team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies.
- Handles all specimens ! appropriately.
- Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures.
- Prepares prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures.
- Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, and new Operating Room (OR) staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments and OR procedures to include the scrub person role during surgical procedures.
- Recognizes changes in patient conditions including emergencies operatively and taking appropriate actions in response to the patient emergent situation.

NOTE: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken Engli! sh. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
AND
Requires one full year of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this Surgical Technician position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least GS-5 grade level. Specialized experience includes: working in an operating room handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery including providing assistance to a surgeon during a variety of complex surgical procedures; setting up sterile fields with required items for each procedure such as surgical instruments, air-powered, fiber-optic and laparoscopy equipment, etc.; handling surgical specimens appropriately; performing or assisting in training of residents, medical or nursing students and new operating room staff in the operations of equipment, sterile te! chniques, handling of instruments and procedures. ( A full year of work! is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Demonstrating working as a scrub person and/or in an operating room is not sufficient details to determine eligibility and details must demonstrate the types of a variety of complex surgical procedures.)
OR Successfully completed 6 months of graduate level education or an internship. Graduate education is post Bachelor's and must be directly related to the position to be creditable. ( One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester ho! urs should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement). (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
OR Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must be directly related to this position to be creditable. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, techniques and materials in order to assist the surgeon/surgical team during surgical procedures.
- Knowledge of safety procedures for surgical procedures.
- Ability to explain surgical procedures and information to a wide variety of people.
- Ability to prepare and maintain surgical instruments, supplies and equipment.
