The Department of Neurosurgery at th! e University of Minnesota seeks 1 board-eligible / board certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join their clinical practice at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

In this role, the NP/PA will:
Practice primarily in the inpatient clinical practice setting with shared responsibility for assessment and management of patients in neurosurgery which includes the following:

Coordinates care for adult neurosurgical patients throughout the course of evaluation and treatment, including hospital admission, surgical intervention, inpatient care, and discharge planning - coordinating the continuity of care between the hospital floor setting, operating room, and discharge.

Writing admission and daily notes, orders and directs discharge planning and follow up, and works to improve the quality of care and patient satisfaction. Statagies to decrease length of stay and readmission rates on the inpatient service.
Educates patients and/or families about their neurological c! ondition, discharge planning, preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.

Performs inpatient procedures such as: Reprograming shunts, shunt taps, NM shunt flow studies, lumbar punctures, lumbar drains, wound care, central line, stimulator & pump interrogation/programming.

Will work collaboratively with other specialties in coordination and communication of patient care needs.

Maintains accurate and confidential electronic medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, discharge summaries and consultations consistent with state regulatory standards.

Works to collaborate with physicians, residents and fellows, which facilitates timely consultative and referral services

Will be instrumental in the development of care pathways and protocols for neurosurgery service line.

Active involvement with qual! ity improvement initiatives as well as best practice models for hospital and neurosurgery section

Integrates education, research, leadership and consultation into clinical role and functions in collegial relationships with nursing peers, physicians, professionals and others who influence the health care environment.

Participate in Resident and staff education, independent or requested consultation, research, and administration activities.

Analyzes new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or "hands-on training" and assimilates this knowledge into clinical practice.

Position Qualifications:
A qualified candidate will be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and formal Adult Practitioner training program or a graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program. Have a current MN RN license and be approved or eligible by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges! or a current PA license with prescriptive authority through the MN Boa! rd of Medical Practice. Be certified through ANCC or eligible for ANCC national exam or through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.

Required BLS and ACLS certification. If not current will have 3-4 months to become certified from date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous patient care experience is preferred. Experience in neurosurgery is preferred, but not required.
